It's cool to be car-free

Are we seeing a structural shift in the way America lives? And could it happen in other countries? The 1990’s saw more than half of America's population shifting to suburban living. Now, this video from Channel 4 News (18 September 2008) shows how the combination of the credit crunch, housing market meltdown and oil shock could be leading to the "death of the suburb" - hitherto based on affordable commutes for the big family in the big house with the big car. In North America, the distances are longer and the cars are bigger. But are we about to start seeing similar changes elsewhere?
